Distance: 12.6 miles Time: 1:45:20 Avg Pace: 8:35
We just got back from a long weekend camping in La Pine with extended family. The state park we stayed at was about 6 miles from the nearest highway, and nestled in the crook of a river. It made for a pretty (and peaceful) 12ish mile run on Sunday morning. I wish I could have done some trail running, but I didn't have a map of the area, so I just ran on the only road into (and out of) the campground where we stayed. My shins are happy today after 12.6 miles of dirt and asphalt. No concrete = no shin splints.
I also feel like I struck a good balance with nutrition for this run. I had a gel (quick energy) and a breakfast bar (a little more complex energy) before I headed out, and stopped for a couple of fruit strips at the halfway point. I felt strong and my stomach wasn't freaking out on me as much. Good choice.
On my longer runs, I seem to almost always have muscle pain in my hips the following day. At this point I am not too concerned about it (when you are pounding the pavement for 1.5-2+ hours, your whole body is probably gonna hurt. even my abs hurt sometimes) but I am making a note of it in case it gets worse.
